FAQ's

Your safety is our #1 priority.  All climbers will sign a waiver upon packet pickup on Friday afternoon/evening.  In addition, we as comp organizers reserve the right to pull anyone from the competition that we feel jeapardizes the safety of himself/herself, their partner, or those around them.  This is our call, not yours.

WE HAVE BEEN RECEIVING SOME GOOD QUESTIONS FROM SOME OF YOU REGARDING THE COMP.  HERE ARE SOME OF THOSE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS IN RETURN.

1. On a traditional route, can you leave your gear placements for your partner to "pink point"? No, the idea of giving extra points for a gear route is the difficulty in placing the gear yourself. Your partner can "pink point" the route for sport route points but not trad points.  If you fall on your traditional route, do you have to pull your gear to retry?  No, you just lower, pull your rope and then "pink point" your route back to your falling point.  This only applies to you if you have lead the route though.  On the same note, can you lead a sport route with only gear (not clipping the bolts) and receive traditional route points? Although there are a good deal of sport lines that can be lead on gear, we will not allow extra points for this. We want to keep the scoring as simple as possible for the competitors to keep and for the scoring officials to add up. This would complicate scoring and we don't want to go down that road.

2. How will scoring be handled and kept track of? You will be given a single sheet of paper with all scored routes in the Ranch, their grades, and the points given for the climb. This is just a sheet with names, grades, and points on it. The scoring sheet will have spots next to each route where you can mark ticks for climber 1 and climber 2. You will be responsible for having a guidebook, borrowing one, or knowing where the routes are.

3. Is there an age limit? There is no age limit, however there is a waiver form that every climber will sign and if you are under the age of 18 your parent or legal guardian will have to sign the form before you will be allowed to compete. Parents or guardians: Please be aware of the physical and mental straints involved and do not allow your youngster to compete in a competition like this. Of course, descretion is yours.....

4. Will non climbers be allowed on the Ranch? Yes, family and friends are allowed however normal camping fees will apply in their case and they will be required to pay $5 for the pasta dinner on Friday night. Also, your posse can hang with you during your adventure however they can in no way help you in your quest for 24 hours. This also means they cannot fetch your food or water, etc. They will also be asked to stay clear of other climbing parties and not get in the way.

5. Is soloing allowed? Absolutely not.  Anyone soloing routes will be automatically disqualified. Safety is our #1 concern as organizersWhat about skipping bolts? Yes, you can skip bolts. However, if a competitor skips bolts to the point of ground fall potential they may be disqualified. We are very serious about your safety. There will be no exceptions and no sympathy when we disqualify you.

6. What about sandbaggers who register in a lower category? We have essentially eliminated the options for a sandbagger in 2008.  No on will be allowed to climb routes that are rated higher than their registered division.  See the rule page for more information.

7.  What are our lighting options?  Only headlamps?  You can use headlamps, lanterns, flashlights, etc.  No camp fires.

8.  Will you provide drinks and food during the comp?  A great new energy drink, Killer Buzz, will be on hand for "pick me ups" and Clif Bar will also provide their products, however do not count on us for food or drink during your stay (other than the pasta dinner on Friday night).  Bring plenty of water, energy drinks, Clif Bars, and anything else you need to keep the motor running.

9.  Can I bring my pet?  Please do not bring your dog, lizard, cat, or monkey.  It will be a crowded weekend at the ranch in addition to the animals that already occupy the Canyon.  Joe, the goat dog, is mean and definitely not fond of your fido so leave him/her at home.

10.  Are helmets required?  No, helmets are not required although they are recommended.

11.  What will the "logistics" of the comp be like?  What is the schedule/itinerary?  We highly recommend that you arrive early on Friday.  Packet pickup will start at 3 pm on Friday followed by the pasta dinner/slackline comp/Jason Kehl slideshow at 5pm.  We will resume packet pickup at 8 am on Saturday morning.  There will be a pre comp meeting at 9 am where we will go over rules and answer questions.  At 10 am we'll have a shotgun start right outside the pro shop.  The competition will end 24 hours later and scores will be tallied quickly (quicker than last year!).  We will then follow with awards and giveaways.  Afterwards will be the post comp party..........assuming that anyone is still awake!!!!!!!
